Description

Ah, good old descriptive writing. In Language Arts the other day I "officially" introduced descriptive writing and the project we would be working on this unit. What better way for them to get an idea of how to use all of your senses to describe someone then by working together to describe: me! Did you catch that they need to use descriptions that appeal to ALL the senses? Ever tried describing a person in a way that triggers your sense of taste? The fourth grade interpretation of that basically equals cannibalism. You should have seen the looks on their faces.:) Relief flooded several faces when they heard that we wouldn't actually be talking about eating anyone (should I be slightly worried about the ones who looked a little disappointed? fourth grade boys. . . . :)); instead we were going to associate our person with a food taste (and then explain the reason for that taste).
So, from my kids, here are the tastes I remind them of:

1. Brownies - because they're my favorite dessert (not sure where she got that it was my favorite, but it's definitely pretty amazing)

 2. Jolly Ranchers - have I written about jolly ranchers before? My kids love them, and I used them as prizes for answering hard/tricky questions during review games. Before I ran out, that is. There was mourning in my class when I broke the news that they were gone.

3. Jelly Bellies - our substitute for jolly rancher questions.

Notice how there's not a single remotely healthy thing on that list? Yup, there's a reason for that.:)

For smells they came up with Halls cough drops (ok, so I've been fighting a cold lately) and roses (not sure where she got that one, but then she used roses to describe how everything else we discussed smelled:) There are definitely worse smells she could be stuck on as descriptors!).
Those kids crack me up!:)
